My MDA #LiveUnlimited Story: Learning To Keep Going

When I received an email about a initiative for the MDA called #LiveUnlimited I was excited to participate for many reasons. The first reason is that is important to bring awareness about muscle-debilitating diseases and support their organizations. The MDA has a great mission “We’re fighting to free individuals — and the families who love them — from the harmful effects of muscular dystrophy, ALS and related life-threatening diseases so they can live longer and grow stronger“.  The MDA.org page shared some examples of their impact including “MDA is funding more than 150 current research projects in 11 countries, kids and adults make nearly 50,000 visits to MDA Care Centers each year and more than 3,800 kids receive their “best week of the year” at MDA Summer Camp, free of charge”.

There are so many brave families fighting the fight for MDA . Stories like Davion Bartlett who said “strength does not come from your muscles, it comes from your ability to keep going“. He used a running chair and even participated in a marathon. Such an inspiration, but there are many more stories like that.

The second reason (and my personal story) is that my 13 year old son had what is called “SCFE“which left him in a wheelchair for close to 9 months. For that time, I gained an even deeper understanding of the challenges that those with muscle-debilitating diseases suffer and how much support of organizations such as MDA.org make a big difference.

Watching that video about Davion Bartlett made me tearful because I was one of those mothers supporting her son by telling him how important it was to “keep going” and do the race even though he was in a wheelchair. He choose to #LiveUnlimited by doing a 5K in his manual wheelchair, taking turns with me pushing his wheels with grit and determination. I could not of been prouder when both of us reached the finish line and watched the excitement on his face.

This bracelet from Endorphin Warriors is also inspiration from the campaign. I decided to wear mine to remind me of the determination showed by my son during his journey and the brave and inspirational MDA community! I have been working so much that I was putting my health second. So I decided to start making exercise a priority, wearing my bracelet as inspiration to “keep going”!
